Expert Dental Crown Services in New York

A tooth that is cracked, heavily filled, worn down or weakened after a root canal needs more than a filling to last. At Elite Smile NYC, our prosthodontist-led team designs dental crowns in NYC that protect the tooth, restore your bite and match your natural smile so closely that most people can’t tell which tooth was treated.

Every crown is planned in our Midtown Manhattan office at 1776 Broadway and made with our own porcelain laboratory, so shade, shape and fit are checked by the same team from the first visit to the final fitting. If you are comparing dental crowns in New York, this page explains when you need one, the materials we use and what to expect at each appointment.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown, often called a cap, is a custom restoration that fits over the whole visible part of a tooth once it has been prepared. It takes the biting load the tooth can no longer handle on its own and gives it back its natural shape and color.

Modern crowns no longer need a dark metal base. We use high-strength ceramics such as zirconia, so a dental crown in NYC from our office is durable without the grey line at the gum that older metal crowns were known for.

When do you need a dental crown?

  • A large cavity or an old filling that has left too little healthy tooth
  • A cracked, chipped or broken tooth
  • A tooth treated with a root canal, which becomes more brittle
  • Teeth worn down by grinding (bruxism)
  • A badly discolored or misshapen tooth that bonding or a veneer can’t correct
  • Replacing an old, worn or poorly fitting crown
  • Covering a dental implant or anchoring a bridge

Porcelain Crowns NYC: Materials We Use

The right material depends on where the tooth is, how hard you bite and how much it shows when you smile. We choose it with you at your consultation.

Zirconia crowns

Milled from a solid block of ultra-strong ceramic. Ideal for back teeth and for patients who grind, where strength matters most.

Layered porcelain on zirconia

A strong zirconia base with porcelain hand-applied on top for depth and translucency. We use this for front teeth that need both strength and beauty.

IPS e.max all-ceramic crowns

A lifelike glass-ceramic that lets light through like natural enamel. A good choice for a single front tooth that has to blend with its neighbors.

All of our porcelain crowns in NYC are made with our own porcelain laboratory. Small adjustments that other offices would send back to an outside lab can often be made during your appointment, which saves you time.

Your Dental Crown Treatment, Step by Step

1. Consultation and planning

We examine the tooth, take X-rays and photos, and talk through your options. Sometimes a filling, dental bonding or a porcelain veneer is the more conservative choice, and we will tell you if it is.

2. First visit: preparing the tooth

The area is numbed and the tooth is shaped to make room for the crown. We take impressions of the tooth and the opposing teeth, then fit a temporary crown that protects the tooth and works normally while your crown is made. Avoid sticky foods on that side until your next visit.

3. Making your crown

Fabrication takes about ten business days and can be expedited when needed.

4. Second visit: fitting your crown

The temporary is removed and the tooth and crown are cleaned. We check the fit (sometimes with an X-ray), adjust your bite, and permanently cement the crown.

Each visit usually takes about 1 to 1.5 hours.

Why Choose Elite Smile NYC for Dental Crowns in New York

Prosthodontist-led care

Crowns, bridges and implant restorations are the core of prosthodontics. Our team is led by Dr. Ryan Sellinger, a board-certified prosthodontist, so even complex cases are planned by a specialist. Learn more about our prosthodontist in New York City.

Natural-looking results

Shade, shape and surface texture are matched to your own teeth. If you would like a brighter smile, we recommend teeth whitening before your crown is made, because porcelain does not whiten afterwards. For veneers, whitening and full smile makeovers, see our Manhattan cosmetic dentist team.

Crowns for implants and full-mouth restorations

We restore single implants with custom crowns and rebuild worn or damaged smiles tooth by tooth. See real cases, including a full-mouth rehabilitation with zirconia and layered porcelain crowns, on our Our Work page.

Convenient Midtown Manhattan location

Elite Smile NYC is at 1776 Broadway, 18th Floor, New York, NY 10019, close to Columbus Circle. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.

Dental Crowns NYC: Frequently Asked Questions

How long do dental crowns last?

With good home care and regular check-ups, a well-made crown can last many years. Grinding, decay at the edge of the crown and gum health all affect how long it lasts, so we check your crowns at every cleaning.

Does getting a crown hurt?

The tooth is numbed before it is prepared, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity for a few days after each visit is normal.

What is the difference between a crown and a veneer?

A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front of a tooth to change its appearance. A crown covers the whole tooth and is used when the tooth also needs strength and protection.

How much do dental crowns cost in NYC?

The cost depends on the material, the number of teeth and whether other treatment is needed first. You will receive a clear treatment plan and estimate at your consultation.

Can you replace my old crown?

Yes. Old crowns that are worn, chipped, leaking or show a dark line at the gum can be replaced with a modern metal-free porcelain or zirconia crown.
